Question for conversation: What is your favorite battery chemistry?
Ron Hambric (N5SBN)
- Brazos County ARES net tonight
- 443.425 MHz FM (KD5DLW) repeater
- 20:30 or after W5BCS net, whichever is later
- will be discussing upcoming exercise
Bill Rose (K5WTR)
- My favorite chemistry is Iron-Nickel
- “Edison batteries”
- Used to be what telephone company used for power backup
- Lifetime is 25-30 yrs; also very easy to repair
- Second favorite is Lithium-Ion, seems to be the best these days
- Lead-Acid Gel
Matthew Barry (KG5LYE)
- Don’t really have a favorite battery chemistry; all have their drawbacks
- Supercapacitors would be the ideal
- Nickel-Metal-Hydride
- no memory, can deep-cycle without any issues
- can lose their charge over time
- Lithium-Ion tends to degrade over time if held at full charge
- Also don’t like to be deep-cycled
