Question for conversation: What coax do you recommend for HF work? VHF/UHF?

Dick Zimmer (W5DZ)

  • Goal is to minimize loss
    • more loss with longer length and higher frequencies
    • for HF: RG-8 or RG-213 has loss of 1/2 dB per 100 ft
    • for VHF/UHF: LMR-400 3 dB (half of your power!) per 100 ft loss at 440 MHz

Matthew Barry (KG5LYE)

  • I try to minimize use of coax for HF (due to loss)
  • ladder-line / twin lead has very low loss, but can couple with nearby metal (no shielding)
  • be sure to match impedance from coax and balance the feedline: use, e.g. 4:1 or 7:1 balun

Bill Rose (K5WTR)

  • I use CA-400 for all bands
  • pay attention to velocity factor difference, though
  • put some twist in the twin lead to reduce coupling with nearby metal

Ralph Cobb (W5RYC)

  • Also use LMR-400 on yagi and ground-plane
  • ISP Supplies off Hwy 30 has big 400-ft spools of “LMR-equivalent” available for about $380

Buy / Sell

Brad Snyder (KG5SDE)

  • looking to sell Astron VLS-35M variable linear power supply
  • asking $100
  • Good on QRZ if interested

Phil Gates (N5ZKF)

  • West Mountain Radio CLRdsp ClearSpeech noise reduction processor
  • power cord is Anderson Powerpole-terminated
  • sells for $200, asking $120
  • send email to n5zkf@arrl.net if interested

Jonathan Graham (KD5GG)

  • Avoid coax with the foam in it
