Announcements / Comments

Question for conversation: Have you made your own antenna?

Ron Hambric (N5SBN)

  • Tidelands Hamfest in Texas City
    • Small turnout this year
    • ARES / ARRL STX presence
    • Sly Kapchinski (N5GQB) won first place in fox hunt!
  • (via Kevin Walton (N4RMF)): ISS will be broadcasting tonight
    • 21:38 to 21:44
    • passing SW to NE, overhead at 21:41

David Bailey (K5DKB)

  • Regarding ISS: Maximum height at will be 79° elevation (almost straight overhead)
  • built a 2 m / 70 cm dual-band dipole

Don Ling (WB5CKO)

  • Tried building a few antennas
  • Instructions for anyone interested:
    1. make your calculations
    2. go cut the wire to length
    3. put it up
    4. tune it (if resonates too high, then add wire; if it’s too low, just bend the wire back)
    5. don’t worry about the theory, just use the thing!

Matthew Barry (KG5LYE)

  • I love building antennas!
  • started with 2m ground plane vertical antenna
  • 2m J-pole
  • 40m off-center-fed dipole
  • 20m center-fed Zepp/doublet (balun, 300-ohm ladder-line, and just a regular dipole)

Phil Gates (N5ZKF)

  • built a dual-band J-pole out of copper pipe
  • 40 m off-center-fed dipole
  • “Supermoon” tonight

Joe Napoli (KG5SDF)

  • made all of my antennas
  • dual-band J-pole from copper pipe
  • 10 m to 40 m fan dipole
  • designed with that free antenna simulating software

Bill Rose (K5WTR)

  • W3FF home-brew Buddipole
    • works 6 m to 40 m
  • 80 m delta-loop
