Announcements / Comments

Question for conversation: Have you had problems with lightning? Do you have any lightning protection?

Bill Rose (K5WTR)

  • I’ve been hit 4 times… directly!
  • I disconnect my antennas and power every night before I go in
  • Dropped an antenna 10 ft
  • Put all your grounding stuff outside
  • Insulate any coax that you have coming in: dangling coax burned a hole in my table once

Dick Zimmer (W5DZ)

  • ARES net tonight
    • 20:30 or after this net, whichever is later
    • 443.425 MHz FM (KD5DLW) repeater
  • Lightning protection:
    • I have 11 grounding rods around the tower
    • 7 polyphasers on the inside
    • disconnect all radios from coax when I hear thunder
    • Haven’t had any issues yet!

Matthew Barry (KG5LYE)

  • Not much to add to lightning protection
  • lots of cool stuff to learn about lightning
    • different exotic types: especially “elves” and “sprites” going into the upper atmosphere
    • spectacular phenomena to watch
