Announcements / Comments

Question for conversation: Do you have any ham radio equipment in a vehicle?

Bill Rose (K5WTR)

  • If you have a license plate that has your callsign on it, you have to have a radio in the vehicle.
    • A Baofeng HT does the trick…
  • keep in mind: easy to look up your name and address, so drive friendly and safely! 🙂

Rick Pfeil (W4RDP)

  • In process of getting my own radio operator license plates!
  • can get up to 3 copies for your vehicles

Matthew Barry (KG5LYE)

  • It always makes me smile when I see other people with radio operator plates
  • Ran into Craig Lang at ISP Supplies (off Hwy 30) earlier today
    • Got to shake his hand and thank him for his work on the W5BCS repeater antenna
    • Small world!

Don Ling (WB5CKO)

  • Reason you’re required to have a working radio is because if you are summoned for emergency communications, you need to be able to contact.
  • Your name has to be on the title for the vehicle, not someone else’s
  • Perseid meteor shower this weekend
    • Best results 00:00/03:00
    • 150 meteors per hour
    • If you’re willing to try meteor scatter propagation, wait for “ping” on 2m, 6m, and 10m bands… Should give you a few seconds of propagation

Phil Gates (N5ZKF)

  • Monitor calling frequency(-ies) if someone sees you rolling down the road and wants to talk with you 🙂

Joe Napoli (KG5SDF)

  • calling frequencies?
  • N5ZKF:
    • 2m: 144.2 SSB, 146.520 FM
    • 6m: 50.125 SSB, 52.525 FM
    • 70cm: 432.1 SSB, 446.0 FM

Information Exchange

Rich Rychetsky (KI5QNR)

  • Thanks to everyone at Field Day, where I got my license
  • Elevation hurdles… hard to work simplex without using repeaters… Anyone with advice?
    • N5ZKF:
      • 146.490 MHz FM “rag chew” every night
      • Mobile rigs
    • KG5LYE:
      • Need to get a higher power rig (50 W)
      • put your antenna on a pole or tower)
    • N5ZKF:
      • high-gain antennas
      • sometimes conditions really open up (tropospheric ducting)
    • W5RYC:
      • good advice so far!
      • VHF simplex is line-of-sight, so the higher you can get your antenna, the better
